Imagine stepping into a fairytale—the kind filled with majestic castles and warm cups of tea. This is exactly what awaits you in the Cotswolds, a region that combines history, beauty, and the delightful experience of indulging in afternoon tea. As a devoted tea lover and travel enthusiast, I can assure you that a visit to this charming area promises unforgettable memories and a well-deserved break from everyday life.

The Cotswolds are celebrated for their rolling hills, quaint villages, and rich historical sites, including stunning castles. The serene beauty of the region, married with the traditions of afternoon tea, makes every afternoon feel like a special occasion.

The Allure of Cotswold Castles

Each castle in the Cotswolds has its own unique tale to tell, adding layers of history to the breathtaking scenery. Exploring these ancient fortresses is like stepping back in time.

One stop on my journey was Sudeley Castle, a 15th-century gem rich in royal heritage. Home to beautifully maintained gardens, it also features a fascinating exhibition honoring Queen Katherine Parr, the last wife of Henry VIII. As I strolled through the castle, I imagined the daily life of those who called this place home. For history buffs, Sudeley Castle welcomes approximately 50,000 visitors each year, eager to immerse themselves in its stories.

Another notable feature was the distinctive Sezincote House, a 200- year- old Mogul Indian palace nestled in a picturesque setting of temples, grottoes, waterfalls, and canals, evoking the Taj Mahal. Located 600 feet above sea level in the North Cotswolds, the estate is managed according to traditional English standards, yet it is far from conventional, as it is constructed with a blend of Hindu and Muslim architectural styles.

As I wandered through shadowy corridors and expansive grounds, I felt both exhilarated and contemplative, almost hearing whispers of the past.

The Ritual of Afternoon Tea

Following my exploration of captivating castles, I decided to immerse myself in the quintessential British tradition of afternoon tea—a lovely way to unwind and reflect.

Although there are numerous charming tearooms in the Cotswolds, we opted for an unparalleled experience at The Manor House. Enter a bygone era for a traditional delight reminiscent of a period drama within the 14th-century honey-colored stone building. After selecting from a well-balanced list of 19 loose teas, we were presented with a three-tiered assortment of enticing scones, sandwiches, and desserts. The warm ambiance embraced me, and the delicate china on each table shone invitingly. Nestled in a cozy window seat, I was enchanted by the scent of freshly baked scones. Their menu describes the scones as a 'bridge' between the savory items typically enjoyed first and the sweets, but I prefer to savor my warm scones first. Along with my pot of Darjeeling tea, I indulged in a glass of delicate salmon-colored sparkling Ridgeview Fitzrovia Rosé from the heart of Sussex, England.

Finding the Best Tea Rooms

If you are planning a tea journey through the Cotswolds, here are a couple of delightful spots you can’t miss:

  1. The Slaughters Manor House - This beautiful 17th-century 4-star manor house combines contemporary interiors with country charm and one of the most acclaimed restaurants in the Cotswolds. Enjoy an afternoon tea ourside on their five acres of stunning landscaped gardens or in the cozy dining room.

  2. Cotswold Tearooms in Bourton-on-the-Water - Often referred to as the "Venice of the Cotswolds," this village's tearooms feature homemade cakes that will tempt any sweet tooth.

To truly enjoy the magic of the Cotswolds, dedicate a full day to each of the towns, explore castles, enjoy history and experience tea. Starting your adventure early allows you to immerse yourself in the rich histories held within each castle's walls.
